I spent the 2018-2019 academic year as a Writing Fellow for Visual and Performing Arts and History undergraduate classes. I had the opportunity to work with undergraduate students both in a classroom setting and one-on-one, helping them improve their writing and research skills while developing my own abilities as a leader and communicator.
I am currently spending the Summer as a research associate for a project titled Deciphering Secrets: Unlocking the Manuscripts of Medieval Spain. My responsibilities include establishing an editorial structure for modern digital transcriptions of medieval documents, compiling metadata to facilitate research, and posting materials to an online platform to be accessed by students and researchers from around the world. The results of this project will be presented by UCCS Professor Roger Martinez at a conference hosted by the University of Oxford in England titled “Dark Archives: A Conference on the Medieval Unread,” in September 2019
The Steelworks Center of the West is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving southern Colorado’s industrial history. It is home to the archives and artifacts of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company and its predecessor and subsidiary companies. It is also home to the Steelworks Museum, which provides exhibits and educational programming to visitors of all ages.
As Archives Manager of the Steelworks Center I maintained the organization’s vast archival collections, digitized archival materials, assisted students and researchers, and supervised student interns. As part of a small staff I also had a number of duties and responsibilities that fell outside of the scope of a typical archivist including website development, event planning and coordination, graphic arts, marketing, public speaking, and more. I also co-produced a book for Arcadia Press’ “Images of America” series titled The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company in 2018.
As Interim Executive Director (January 2017 – November 2017) I took on the additional responsibilities of managing the organization’s staff and volunteers, working directly with the board of directors, maintaining the organization’s budget, hiring new staff members, and overseeing the construction of a 5.7 acre multi-use artifact park known as the “Steelworks Park.” I also participated in fundraising efforts by writing appeal letters to the community, and by working collaboratively with staff and directors on a number of successful grant applications.
